Truck Crashes Kill Thousands, Injure Hundreds of Thousands, Fatal Truck Accident Lawyers in Mississippi (MS)
Truck crashes killed 4,862 people in 2018. The number of such incidents is on the rise. In terms of injuries caused by large truck collisions, 112,000 large truck crashes involving injuries took place in that same year. Sadly, these crashes are only increasing.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) collects crash data throughout the United States. The early estimates from 2019 suggest that overall, crash-related fatalities are declining. Between 2018 and 2019, the number of deaths dropped from 36,560 to 36,120, illustrating a 1.2 percent decline in vehicle collision deaths nationally.
The drop in fatal vehicle accidents is a positive sign, although, with well over 36,000 people dying on the road each year, much work remains to be done in order to make our roads safer.
Unfortunately, large truck deaths were not part of the decline. Deadly collisions involving large trucks rose by one percent in 2019. Disappointing and disturbing statistics indicate that truck drivers are dying more now than at any point in three decades. Of course, the majority of victims in truck crashes are not truckers themselves, though, but other drivers and passengers who are sharing the road with so many enormous commercial vehicles.
Passenger vehicles are being designed with more advanced safety features that are helping to prevent collisions between these smaller vehicles. Systems such as automatic emergency braking or forward-collision warnings are allowing many motorists to avoid would be collisions.
The installation of potentially life-saving features in large trucks is only now beginning to occur. The lag could be part of the reason that trucks are involved in more crashes all the time, while other categories of crashes continue to drop each year.
